What Is an Apostille?

An apostille is an official certificate that verifies the authenticity of a public document for use in another country. It confirms the validity of the signature, seal, and authority of the official who issued or notarized the document. Apostilles are accepted by countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention.

For documents issued by a U.S. state, the apostille is issued by that state's Secretary of State. For federal documents, such as FBI Background Checks or Certificates of Naturalization, the apostille is issued by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vital Record Apostille Services

Find answers to common questions about document requirements, sworn translations, and turnaround times.

No. The Secretary of State requires an original certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the State Registrar or Department of Health. Photocopies, scanned prints, or laminated records are not eligible for authentication.
Some states (such as New York and Maryland) require vital certificates to first be certified by the County Clerk of the county where the record was issued before the Secretary of State will place the apostille.
While the certificates themselves don't technically expire, many foreign countries require the certified vital record to have been issued within the last 1 to 5 years. Always check the guidelines of your destination country before submitting.
No problem! iPride offers full document retrieval services. We can request official, certified copies of birth, marriage, death, and divorce certificates from state health departments and county clerks across all 50 states, and then apostille them for you.
If the official language of the country where you are submitting the document is not English, the local authorities will almost certainly require a certified translation of your vital record and its apostille. We offer professional certified translations in over 90 languages that can be processed at the same time as your apostille.
