What Is an Apostille for Brazil?

An apostille for Brazil is an official certificate that verifies the authenticity of U.S. public documents (such as FBI background checks, birth certificates, and marriage certificates) for use in Brazil. Since both the United States and Brazil are members of the Hague Apostille Convention, a standard Hague apostille is the only legal certification required by Brazilian authorities.

For state-issued vital records (birth, marriage, or divorce certificates), the apostille must be issued by the Secretary of State where the document was originally recorded. For federal documents like FBI Background Checks, the apostille is issued by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.

Cartório & Polícia Federal Requirements

Brazilian civil registry offices (Cartórios de Registro Civil) and the Federal Police (Polícia Federal) require U.S. documents to be original certified copies bearing an apostille. FBI background checks submitted for visa renewals or residency must generally be dated within 90 days.

Apostille certificates must remain permanently attached to the underlying document. Removing the staple invalidates the authentication for Brazilian legal use.
