What Is an Apostille for Canada?

An apostille for Canada is an official certificate that verifies the authenticity of U.S. public documents (such as FBI background checks, birth certificates, and marriage certificates) for use in Canada. Since both the United States and Canada are members of the Hague Apostille Convention (following Canada's official accession on January 11, 2024), a standard Hague apostille is the only legal certification required by Canadian authorities.

For state-issued vital records (birth, marriage, or divorce certificates), the apostille must be issued by the Secretary of State where the document was originally recorded. For federal documents like FBI Background Checks, the apostille is issued by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.

IRCC & Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) Guidelines

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and designated evaluation agencies (WES, ICAS, CES) require academic records and criminal background reports to bear official apostille certificates.

Apostille certificates must remain permanently attached to the underlying document. Removing the staple invalidates the authentication for Canadian legal use.
