What Is an Apostille for Colombia?

An apostille for Colombia is an official certificate that verifies the authenticity of U.S. public documents (such as FBI background checks, birth certificates, and marriage certificates) for use in Colombia. Since both the United States and Colombia are members of the Hague Apostille Convention, a standard Hague apostille is the only legal certification required by Colombian authorities.

For state-issued vital records (birth, marriage, or divorce certificates), the apostille must be issued by the Secretary of State where the document was originally recorded. For federal documents like FBI Background Checks, the apostille is issued by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.

Cancillería & Notaría Submission Guidelines

The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería) strictly enforces recency rules for visa applications. FBI background checks and pension letters generally must be issued within 90 days of the online visa application date.

Apostille certificates must be physically attached to the certified document. Removing or altering the staple invalidates the authentication for Colombian legal use.
