What Is an Apostille for South Korea?

An apostille for South Korea is an official certificate that verifies the authenticity of U.S. public documents (such as FBI background checks, birth certificates, and marriage certificates) for use in South Korea. Since both the United States and South Korea are members of the Hague Apostille Convention, a standard Hague apostille is the only legal certification required by South Korean authorities.

For state-issued vital records (birth, marriage, or divorce certificates) and notarized university diplomas, the apostille must be issued by the Secretary of State where the document was originally notarized or recorded. For federal documents like FBI Background Checks, the apostille is issued by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.

EPIK, Hagwon & F-4 Visa Submission Guidelines

For E-2 visa applicants (EPIK / Hagwon), Korean immigration requires an FBI background check bearing a federal apostille dated within 6 months of submission, plus a notarized copy of your university diploma bearing a state apostille.

Apostille certificates must remain permanently attached to the underlying document. Removing the staple invalidates the authentication for Korean legal use.
